Finally. 2022 is the year our charity trek to Machu Picchu will go ahead!

What Charity Trek to Machu Picchu?

Toby & I booked into this trek in 2020 and, well I don’t need to tell you the rest. This is our 4th reschedule. It’s gone on for so long that it doesn’t actually feel real anymore.

On the 13th of May we will fly from Heathrow to Sao Paulo, to Lima and finally, to Cuzco. The trip is 10 days in total (including travel) and is graded as ‘tough’ on the Charity Challenge website. This is because we will be trekking to dizzying heights – our highest point on the walk is 4500m!

About the Trek

Once we arrive in Cuzco, we have half a day to acclimatise to the altitude (3350m) and another day with a practice walk. The trek will commence on day 4.

On day 4,5,6 & 7, we’ll be walking roughly 7 hours a day, firstly up to 4500m and then coming back down to Machu Picchu (2430m).

During the trek we’ll be camping in the wilderness. Hopefully we don’t get eaten by wild alpacas.

On day 7 we reach Machu Picchu passing through the Sun Gate. Day 8 we will return to Machu Picchu in the morning to explore properly and in the afternoon, we’ll be transferred back to Cuzco. Day 9 we fly home.

Charity Challenges

This will be my third charity challenge (Thailand jungle trek 2013 & Sumatra jungle trek in 2014). It will be Toby’s first. These sorts of trips are paid for by the charities on the premise that you fundraise a certain amount of money (normally around £4k). The exact cost of both of our trips have been generously gifted to our chosen charities on our behalf. Therefore, anything we raise is going above and beyond. We’ve both received lovely messages from our charities expressing their thanks for support during such trialling times. We gave the charities our cheques back in 2020 when understandably, a lot of people had stopped their regular donations. We’re both trying to raise as much as we can seeing as so much time has passed.

ActionAid

I am raising money for ActionAid which is a charity I have been supporting since 2019 by sponsoring a child on a monthly basis. ActionAid are currently running a Ukraine humanitarian appeal too. This charity’s main focus is helping women and girls in developing countries and during crisis.

ActionAid got in touch to tell me the money I have already raised will:

  • Help us provide coaching for 200 girls in Ghana to help them understand their rights and gain confidence to challenge harmful practices like female genital mutilation
  • train 45 women in The Gambia on poultry and feed production to improve their ability to earn an income
  • Help us  train 35 counsellor’s to provide comfort and psychosocial support to survivors of violence/girls who’ve suffered violence

For more details & if you wish to support this amazing cause, please visit my Just Giving page here. If you can’t be arsed to read the whole thing, know that I have quit drinking & would appreciate the cost of a drink donation <3

Dog’s Trust

Toby is raising money for Dog’s Trust. Need I say more? You can visit his Just Giving Page here.

You’ll notice Toby’s page is set up for a marathon and that’s because he doesn’t do things by half… he is also running the London Marathon in October & is supporting Dog’s Trust for both. Because he loves dogs.

Byeeee

If you decide to support one of our chosen charities then truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Every little helps.

We plan to keep you updated over the coming weeks as we prepare for the trip. So keep an eye out for our upcoming vlogs.

Love Christine & Toby x o
